Hurricane Zones Need Special Attention Florida has led the country in new home starts for the past 5 years. In 2003, Florida had 211,000 new home starts and a need for a higher building standard because of the marine climate, termites, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Approximately 1.8 million new homes are built in the U.S. each year. 85% are built from wood (44% stick built and 41% panel built) and 14% are made from concrete block. Concrete block is used primarily for protection from hurricanes, termites, black mold and tornadoes. Concrete block is slow to build and cannot be panelized. Automation and Panelization of wood in the North could not be used in South Florida until now. Panelizing with Advanced Construction Composites will save up to 71.5% of the wood framing labor and up to 300% of the concrete block construction time at a lower cost in those areas of the United States, the Caribbean Basin, Central America, and South America where concrete block is predominantly used.
Many countries have conditions similar to South Florida and their population pressures create significant needs for sustainable and affordable housing. Those countries need a quicker and easier method of providing housing. Each year they are falling farther behind and their housing deficit continues to grow. Exports are Needed About 45% of our production will be exported to the Caribbean (152,000 annual starts), Mexico (377,400 annual starts), Central America (235,400 annual starts), and South American (2,522,600 annual starts). These countries also have need of stronger, safer, longer-lasting, energy efficient, lower cost buildings buildings. Erecting composite panels overcomes several of the major building problems in these areas:
