Hurricane Resistant Houses

CBS Homes Florida, LLC, builds houses with fiberglass skeletons and panels. On their website, they claim:

CBS structural framing is termite proof, water proof, mold proof, earthquake resistant, and withstands hurricane and tornado force winds in excess of 350 MPH (130 MPH destroys wood and concrete block construction).

Termite Proof? Sweet, we could use that down here in New Orleans.

Water proof? I’m down.

Mold proof? Check.

Earthquake resistant? Um, I guess you can’t be too careful.

Withstands hurricane force winds in excess of 350 MPH? Priceless.

Why aren’t we ordering some of these yesterday? Put some fiberglass homes up on stilts and you got yourself a hurricane proof city. The home owner can come up with what it would cost to rebuild a traditional wood frame house, and the federal government can chip in and pay whatever else is needed to do it with fiberglass. This way, if the government pays for prevention now, it won’t have to pay more later.

And, check out what labor is needed:

A crew of 5 transports and erects the exterior support walls with a crane and adds the roof in one day. One 2,000 square foot house can be built in 48 minutes on the production line or in 2 hours on-site using local labor.

Mr. Mayor, Mrs. Governor, what else do you need?

It is gratifying that someone has visited our site and understands what building to a higher standard could mean for the coastal regions.

We have felt a great need to start a housing component factory in New Orleans and bring employment to the area and we are aggressively pursuing that goal. It is important for New Orleans' residents be able to point with pride for many years at homes, throughout the city, that they personally helped to rebuild. Our mission is to make this happen.

In this process, we have identified buildings on the industrial canal that would be ideal. The location between the 9th Ward and St. Bernards Parish could be an epicenter assisting the New Orleans rebirth and revitalization. While those buildings all sustained damage, they are good enough to house our production and get it started until we can patch up the plants.

Factories and machines are not cheap, and the machines needed can take up to 21 weeks to build, but once the small amount of money is secured then the plant could be putting out 30 homes a day or the support walls for up to 60 homes a day that have to be elevated out of harms way.

The unique part of this business is that we are not home builders. We have no standard models. We supply exactly to the drawings of the building. Any builder brings any plan, in any design, in any size, and two weeks later has a superior house shell erected, by us, for them to finish inside and out in the style they choose.

We think that this is the best solution to maintain the "Gumbo" that was, is, and should always be New Orleans. Using a stronger, safer, longer lasting exterior fiberglass skeleton prevents rebuilding with the same materials that failed.

We look forward to being a part of New Orleans for many years to come.

Sincerely
James P. Antonic
