Advanced Pultruded Construction Composite to replace concrete block and wood
August 1, 2005 -- Managing Director James P. Antonic unveiled today plans to manufacture Advanced Pultruded Construction Composites that can withstand 350 mile per hour winds. The composites are very strong and lightweight and have the ability to recover 100% after bending slightly under stress. This property enables CBS homes to withstand tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
The composites are hollow rectangular 2x4 tubes that are combined with C-channels on the top and bottom to form a rigid skeleton before cement board sheeting is screwed in place. Window and door rough openings are framed with c-channels and the entire structure is fastened with stainless steel screws that are 8 times stronger than nails.
Builders can specify panels with just sheeting attached or with the windows, doors, electrical conduits, and insulation in place ready for sheet rock and finishing. CBS crews erect the external support walls, the roof skeleton, and roof panels. A 2,000 square foot home can be completely enclosed in 1 day by a crew of 5 and should enable builders to finish and deliver more homes each year with their same crews.
Using a composite skeleton 4 inches thick instead of a 10 inch thick concrete block wall increases living space by 1.5 square feet for every 3 feet of building perimeter. Composites used in CBS panels are mold proof, water proof and do not interfere with electronic signals. Superior insulation can be ordered with up to 682% higher insulation value than a 10 inch concrete block wall. Panels are set into place for a savings of about 20% compared to concrete block.
Profiles for the long pieces are made by pulling continuous fiberglass strands through a resin bath and then through a heated forming die. Tolerances are very close. The result is a stud that is stronger than steel and lighter than wood. A 28 foot 95 PSF truss made from composite weighs only 100 pounds and can easily be set by 2~3 men without a crane.
Unlike extrusions, where plastics are pushed through a heated die, these composites have over 10,000,000 very fine continuous strands (fishing lines) running the entire length of the stud. These strands are immersed in the resin mixtures and pulled with 10 tons of force through the die creating improved strength just like the stretched steel cables that improve the strength of pre-stressed concrete.
The studs cool in a few feet and are cut to length with a traveling cutoff saw. The result is a structural profile that has up to 3,000 times more strength than wood, minimum flex, and 10% memory after flex. These composites contain so much glass fiber that they are impervious to termites, other insects, and rodents.
Window frames and slider doors made with composites save conducted energy. Advanced Pultruded Construction Composites conduct only 4~5 (Btu/ft2/0F/inch) whereas Aluminum frames and doors conduct 1,200 (Btu/ft2/0F/inch). This low conductance enables further significant energy savings. CBS composites have a smoke index under 450 and a flame spread under 25 both of which qualify for, and are rated as a Class-A building material (ASTM E-84).
